History of the Martial Arts5 Animals of KenpoRanking Structure & Belts

The Study of the Martial Arts began thousands of years ago in China.  They were designed on the concepts of Self-Defense and Character Development. The principles stressed in it's philosophy are Respect, Confidence, Discipline, Mental Alertness & a more Positive Attitude towards Life.

At USA Karate these concepts are Alive & Well.  Students are taught the highly practical self-defense skills of Sullivans American Kenpo-Karate.  This martial art has it's roots based in the Kenpo/Jui-Jitsu/Karate Styles of Martial Arts.  Once a student reaches the Black Belt Levels, they are introduced to the concepts of Shaolin Kempo, Shotokan, Kung-Fu, Kenpo, Jiu-Jitsu and other styles of martial arts (including Okinawan) as well.  This unique blending of Chinese and Japanese fighting skills helps create a more well rounded martial artist.  One who is taught not only the values and wisdom of the ancient masters, but also who can practically defend themselves in the modern world under any situation.

Students are also trained to handle different types of weapons such as the Bo Staff, NunChukas, Kamas, and Broad Sword.  More importantly, our students are taught to use their head, before their fists.  Common-Sense is the basic precept in Self-Defense.

In addition to learning practical Self-Defense and fighting technique, each and every student, from the 4 year olds to the Adult Black Belts, must learn and know the meanings of the Rules of the School, The Student Creed, and the 5 Animals.

Although moderate physical contact is normal in training, we do not believe that you must be subjected to unnecessary risk of injury to improve one's skills.  We take many precautions and will never intentionally put a student in harms way.  Safety and Self Control are always foremost in mind.

All students are taught to be self-motivated for success.  It is our belief that nobody can make you a Black Belt, just as nobody will just hand you success.  These things require hard work and determination by the student.  They require a level of commitment to self improvement.  To paraphrase a popular saying: "You got to Want it to Have it!"
